Tips for Landing an Internship with Borland Benefield

by | Apr 20, 2023

Borland Benefield was founded in 1922 when William Howard Borland, Sr. answered Alabama’s need for quality accounting services. At the time, Mr. Borland was the 54th accountant to be certified in the state. For more than one hundred years, that initial dream has seen Borland Benefield grow into one of the most respected accounting firms in the Southeast, with offices in Birmingham, Florence, and Auburn.

Borland Benefield’s success is largely due to the firm’s commitment to excellence – an excellence that is delivered by the individuals that make up the staff. All the more reason Borland Benefield is always looking for talented minds to recruit and mentor.

University Events

“Meet the Firms” at Troy University.

Borland Benefield visits several schools in Alabama and Mississippi each year for recruitment purposes, including:

  • The University of Alabama
  • Auburn University
  • Samford University
  • The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)
  • Troy University
  • University of Mississippi (Ole Miss)
  • University of North Alabama

While there is no set schedule for these visits, Borland Benefield typically attends “Meet the Firms” and other accounting career events at each school twice yearly, usually in September and January.

When Borland Benefield representatives visit campuses, prospective interns are encouraged to bring a copy of their resumés and a professional attitude. This is an opportunity for Borland Benefield and the student to get a first look at each other and see if there might be a potential match. We recommend interns do preliminary research on the firms that have captured their interest. The more questions and qualifications a student presents, the better.  (Aside: We’ll be really impressed if you mention this blog article and some facts about the firm!)

The Right Stuff

Borland Benefield’s strength comes from the synergy felt through the entire organization. Because of this, the firm looks for team players with excellent communication and critical thinking skills.

The firm encourages interns to keep an open mind, help fellow members, and absorb as much knowledge as possible during their time with the firm. This internship is just as helpful for interns as it is for Borland Benefield. After all, there is no better way to prepare a student for an accounting career than to participate and engage as much as possible.

Learning With Borland Benefield

Borland Benefield’s internship program is designed to provide students with first-hand experience in the accounting field and prepare them for their future careers.

In that aim, Borland Benefield offers two internships in that pursuit: tax and audit.

Tax Interns will work from early January to April 15th, assisting Borland Benefield associates with preparing tax returns for individuals and businesses.

Audit Interns will work during the January-March busy season or during the summer to assist firm associates with auditing fieldwork across a multitude of clients and industries.

Growing the Accountants of the Future

Borland Benefield’s internship program is a practical way for students to find their passion and begin successful accounting careers. The program provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and gain valuable real-world experience while also showing them the quality and closeness Borland Benefield holds so highly.
